The Baker Act

Our Crisis Stabilization Unit is the designated Public Baker Act receiving facility for adults in Miami-Dade County.

The Florida Mental Health Act, commonly referred to as the “Baker Act” allows for involuntary admission and evaluation to be provided to individuals who are experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis. Under the Baker Act, loved ones can seek evaluation and services for individuals who:

  • May pose a danger to themselves or others
  • Are unable to determine their need for care
  • May be at risk of suffering neglect
  • Refuse to care for themselves, putting their own well-being at risk

Through the Baker Act, a person can be involuntarily placed in a care environment for up to 72 hours, pending further evaluation and potential treatment. 1
